NAPTHINE WELCOMES MASSIVE COUNCIL RATE RISE
The Napthine Government opposes Labor’s plan to reduce council rate rises, Minister for Local Government, Tim Bull, confirmed today.
Labor’s plan will require councils to justify any rate rises above CPI to the Essential Services Commission. Currently, many councils are forecasting rate increases well above CPI.
Denis Napthine has no plan to discourage or prevent excessive rate rises and excessive spending. He will just sit back and watch the rates go up.
Quotes attributable to Mr Wynne:
“Council rates are one of the biggest cost families face each year and Denis Napthine has no answer.
“Tony Abbott and Denis Napthine are already taxing and charging more than ever before – now they’re just making our cost of living even higher.”
“Only Labor will require councils to justify rate increases before an independent umpire.”
- Labor will amend the Local Government Act to require that draft budgets are submitted to the Essential Services Commission before they are adopted.
- These additional powers will ensure that councils are properly managing their budgetary responsibilities, and not hitting ratepayers with unsubstantiated or excessive rate increases.
