Collingwood Children’s Farm
On the weekend I attended Collingwood Children’s Farm with the member for Prahran, where a truce was in order for the morning. We were joined by the wife of the Governor, Mrs Chernov, and representatives of the Good Shepherd Sisters, along with representatives from the Victorian Farmers Federation, to launch Celebrating Farming week and highlight 175 years of continuous farming at the Abbotsford Convent.
What an extraordinary achievement. We celebrated with the staff of the Collingwood Children’s Farm, including the coordinator, Alex Walker, and his staff who do a fantastic job and who have never lost sight of what the children’s farm is all about.
It is about children, particularly children who may not have the opportunity to interact with farm animals, and helping them to understand what farming is about and that milk does not just come from the Woolworths supermarket. It is a beautiful facility down on the banks of the Yarra River.
The Collingwood Children’s Farm has received an associate membership of the European Federation of City Farms — a fantastic achievement. This is truly an oasis of tranquillity on the doorstep of the city and an extraordinary legacy of John and Nancy Cain. Congratulations to them both. This is a marvellous facility for Melbourne.
